A visit to the Dalsnibba summit is really an encounter with the elements! The summit is virtually unique because you can really experience the high mountains without having to walk for hours. The weather at the summit is changeable and can vary from thick fog to radiant sunshine in the blink of an eye!
It is a photographer’s dream to witness these stunning variations and there have naturally been many photos taken of the view from the summit. It is not uncommon to observe thick fog in the lowlands while the sun is shining at the summit.
In May/June the area is covered in snow. With high snow banks along the road, many people will have an encounter with ‘Winter Norway’ that they might not have expected. Many visitors have enjoyed their first snowball fight up here!
The snow covered peaks contrasting with the verdant landscape further down and the fjord at the bottom are an impressive sight. In July, summer also arrives here and the rocky landscape emerges, as do the many hundreds of stone cairns that visitors love to build.
The incredible sunrise and sunset have to be witnessed. (www.sunrisesunset.com) In August and September when the evenings are longer, the starry sky is a wonderful sight from here. Many people visit the summit to study the stars through a telescope. A complete absence of any artificial light means that the experience is significantly more intense compared to other locations. To see the surrounding mountains bathed in moonlight is also an unforgettable experience.
Flora
It’s hard to believe that much could grow up here in such a rocky landscape but if you look carefully you will discover there is an astonishingly rich variety of flora. Small, beautiful plants have found fertile soil in rock fissures and screes. There is also a wealth of different varieties of moss and lichen with reindeer lichen as the dominant species.
Fauna
The terrain here is the kingdom of the wild reindeer. These beautiful creatures can often be observed on the side of the road and in the area around the plateau. This is also the natural habitat of wolverines and Arctic foxes but these are seldom observed as they are naturally shy. Eagles often circle overhead and there is abundant grouse terrain.
The history of Geiranger Skysslag and the Nibbevegen toll road is an account of far-sightedness, entrepreneurial spirit and a group of shareholders with an indomitable resolve and a strong determination to create a unique experience for the village’s many visitors.
The road had already been completed by 1939 but due to the 2nd World War commercial traffic did not commence until after 1945. Tourists were then conveyed into the mountains in specially constructed vehicles.
In 2004, a new service building was built at the summit. The service building has a souvenir shop and toilets, as well as a small cafe. It also has a unique architecture that reflects the surrounding alpine terrain.
